What Is the Standard Business Card Size in Malaysia?

The business card size Malaysia prints most is 89mm × 54mm – the same as Singapore and Hong Kong. Older templates sometimes say 90mm × 54mm; both sizes came to a very similar size and shape. Today we, BCMY, cut almost any business card size Malaysia brands can imagine – from 40 × 40 mm up to 89 × 54 mm – so the size follows your brand preference, not the other way around.

Why Is the Standard Size 89mm x 54mm?

Business cards in Malaysia were historically printed on A4 sheets – first on photostat machines, later colour copiers and laser printers. The sheets were trimmed on business card cutters, and those cutters came set for one size: 89mm × 54mm, or 90mm × 54mm depending on the machine. Custom sizes needed a custom cutting setup, which cost extra.

The size stuck because it works. An 89 × 54 mm card fits wallets, cardholders and name card cases everywhere without bending or sticking out.

For reference:

  • 89 × 54 mm – Malaysian / Asia-Pacific standard (most common)
  • 90 × 54 mm – historical cutter size, still found on old templates
  • 85 × 55 mm – UK / Europe standard (85 × 54 mm is also ordered locally)
  • 89 × 51 mm – US / Canada standard

Unless you have a specific reason or brand appearance enhancement requirement, order the standard size so pricing and turnaround time are most competitive – it stays the default business card size Malaysia printers quote fastest.

Business Card Size Malaysia vs Other Countries

Different regions settled on different standards, based on local printing practice and the ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1 format behind credit cards worldwide. Compare them with the business card size Malaysia uses every day:

Region / CountrySize (mm)Size (inches)Notes
Malaysia / Singapore / Hong Kong89 × 543.54 × 2.13Most common in Asia-Pacific
United States / Canada89 × 513.5 × 2.0Imperial system standard
United Kingdom / Europe85 × 553.35 × 2.17Slightly narrower and taller than US
Credit card size85 × 543.35 × 2.13Fits standard card slots exactly
Square card54 × 542.13 × 2.13Distinctive branding shape
2:1 ratio card89 × 453.5 × 1.77Popular for minimalist designs
Japan91 × 553.58 × 2.17Slightly larger than Malaysian standard

Globalisation made most sizes acceptable anywhere, but regional expectations still matter – a card handed to a Japanese client feels different at 91 x 55 mm.

What About Bleed and Safe Area?

Printing is never cut perfectly to the edge of your design – the blade needs a margin. That margin is bleed:

ZoneDistance from edgeWhat goes here
Bleed1.5mm outside the cut lineBackground colours and images that must run to the edge
Trim / cut0mm (the final cut)This is where the blade lands
Safe area2mm inside the cut lineText, logos, QR codes – anything that must not be trimmed off

Trimming tolerance is at 1mm. Avoid narrow frame design as the outcome may appear like unbalance left-right and/or top/bottom.

This is a custom run job with Pantone Matching System (PMS) Color printing. The dotted line is to illustrate the trim line where blade is landed. The bleed area will make sure that the color is fully covered to all the edges.

What Resolution and File Format Should I Use?

For crisp print, your artwork should be:

  • Recommended Vector PDF, AI or SVG – these preserve vector text
  • 300 DPI minimum for JPG and PNG file (never 72 DPI web images)
  • CMYK colour mode, not RGB – RGB colours shift when printed
  • Correct final size / canvas: 92 x 57 mm (89 x 54 mm card plus 1.5mm bleed each side)

Low-resolution artwork is the number one cause of blurry business cards. Check the full design guidelines before submitting artwork.

How Long Does Printing Take?

Standard gloss and matt lamination business cards ship in 1–2 working days after artwork confirmation. Next day business card is available for selected material. Cards in the common business card size Malaysia range typically run 1–6 working days. The clock starts the next business day after you confirm the artwork – not when you place the order. Semi-custom and custom business card will require longer processing time depending on the finishing processes requirement. Other express business card options are coming soon.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the exact business card size in mm?

89 x 54 mm is the business card size Malaysia orders most. With 1.5mm bleed on each side, your artwork canvas should be 92 x 57 mm. Custom sizes run from 40mm x 40mm upward. Please refer to order page.

Can I make a business card bigger than standard?

Yes. Extra size non-standard sizes fall under our semi-custom / custom business card category. The costing will be more due to material utilisation and custom run fixed costs. Send us the design and we will quote it.

What is the minimum font size for a business card?

Keep body text minimum at 6.5pt / 7pt and your name and contact details at 9–11pt. It depends on the typography design, your target audience, printing / finishing process and so on. Below 5pt becomes hard to read and is not practical for print.

Do you print on both sides?

Yes. Double-sided printing is standard and costs the same as single-sided at most quantities. Use the back for your service list, a Logo or QR code or a second language.
